Equal opportunities for all genders

Gender Equality

For us, gender equity means ensuring that all genders and gender identities can participate equally in university life, regardless of sexual or romantic orientation. This includes promoting equality for women, trans*, inter*, and non-binary persons—especially in fields where they are underrepresented—as well as giving greater consideration to their perspectives in both academic and administrative contexts.

What is gender equality?

As part of its promotion of EDI, UoB is working to realize the goal of equitable participation of all genders and gender identities. This means acknowledging discrimination and disadvantage based on gender and allocating resources in such a way that all people, regardless of their gender or sexual/romantic orientation, can participate in university life safely and with a sense of well-being.

A key component of the University of Bonn’s efforts to promote gender equality is the Gender Equality Officer and her team at the Gender Equality Office. They actively work as a central, independent body to implement the university’s legal mandate on gender equality and contribute to the university’s structural and development planning, as well as to appointment and personnel decisions. A stated goal is to increase the visibility of women in academia. The Gender Equality Office is available to all members of the university for concerns regarding equality, gender justice, gender-based discrimination or cases of sexualized discrimination and violence.

What we are doing to promote gender equality?

As part of its diversity strategy the University of Bonn has committed to continuously address issues of gender equality through structural changes by 2030.

Higher Proportion of Women

Through support programs such as STEP and more gender-equitable hiring procedures, the goal is to increase the proportion of female professors to 33%.

Safe Environment

Awareness-raising measures, such as language guidelines and the revision of forms, as well as all-gender restrooms and contact options for queer people, aim to provide a more inclusive infrastructure.

Career Development

In collaboration with the Gender Equality Office, the Rectorate and the Central Administration, support programs and gender mainstreaming processes are implemented.

Gender Research

Supporting gender research in the field of female immunity through the establishment of a W1 professorship and the provision of gender and diversity consulting services aims to promote more equitable academic practices.
