Pathways to Research for University Students

The German university system can be particularly challenging for students with a refugee or migration background, for example in regards to financing, cultural difference, lack of social contacts or an unfamiliar system of study organization. With the Pathways to Research program, we want to help and support you through your studies with a range of activities and events.

Components of the Program

The program for university students spans two semesters (12 months), and funding can start in either the summer or the winter semester.

The support provided to students includes a scholarship worth €300 per month. Students receiving funding can also attend a wide range of workshops and other events on topics such as academic and scientific work, organizing their studies, scholarships and study financing, and career guidance. Participation in the workshops is optional, and students can put together their own individual timetable. Events are also arranged at the start and at the end of each semester for networking and forming social contacts, at which attendance is expressly encouraged.

The program runs in German as well as English, meaning that there are workshops and events offered in either of those languages.

Application process

When can I apply?

The current application period is from 15 April - 27 May 2024.

How are participants chosen?

This is done by a selection committee made up of representatives of the various faculties, whose decision will be communicated to all applicants by July 2024.

Who can apply?

The program is for University of Bonn students on bachelor’s, master’s, Magister or state examination degree programs. Students must meet the following participation criteria:

  • Refugee and/or migration background*
  • Good to very good grades on your degree program or, for students who are applying for funding for their first semester of studies, a good to very good “Abitur” grade
  • German or English at B2/C1 level depending on the requirements for the relevant degree program
  • Particular social or cultural engagement an advantage

Students do not have to be enrolled at the University of Bonn yet at the time they apply. However, they will not be able to start receiving funding under the Pathways to Research program unless they are enrolled at the University of Bonn.

* “With a migration background” means either that the person concerned was not themselves born with German citizenship or that their parents were not born with German citizenship. Student applications with migration background must have obtained their “Abitur” in Germany in order to be eligible to apply for the program. For students with a refugee background, it is irrelevant whether the higher education entrance qualification was obtained in Germany or abroad.

Students on the ERASMUS Program are not eligible for this program.
