The University of Bonn has successfully applied for funding as part of the ‘Diversity at German Universities’ (Vielfalt an deutschen Hochschulen) initiative. The initiative is implemented by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). One of its aims is to support German universities in boosting visibility of diversity and promoting their own diversity strategies while encouraging the participation of all university members in the process. A total of 33 universities receive funding for diversity projects as part of the initiative.

The Vice Rectorate and the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Unit implemented the project „Promoting Diverse Networks“ in the winter semester of 2023/24. In the process, we worked closely with students, lecturers, researchers and staff members. The overarching goal of the project was to increase awareness of diversity in its various dimensions among all university members and to further anchor diversity in university life and culture.

The project aims to make diversity at the university more visible and increase reflection and appreciation about it, to exchange perspectives on diversity and develope solutions to counter challenges, to establish and improve transparency and knowledge about diversity and to exchange ideas with other universities to gain new input on our work. These goals were implemented with a participatory approach involving all status groups. In this way, different perspectives on diversity can be taken into account.

Various activities are planned to reach as many university members and interested members of the public as possible. In addition to an information campaign planned for the winter, these include information and dialogue formats in the form of a public lecture series and a series of workshop discussions open to all members of the university.
