Name and data changes

Are you transgender, nonbinary or intersex and would like to change your name and/or gender marker? Here you can find out how.

Information on changing your name and gender marker

If you have already changed your name and/or gender marker under the Self-Determination Act and received your new identity card, you can simply apply for a name change via the study portal. Students can apply for a change to their data there under Service > Requests > Changes to Personal Data. All you need to do is submit the 'Bescheinigung über die Namensführung' (Certificate of Name Change) and proof of your old data (identity card, birth certificate).

If you have not yet officially changed your data, you can still apply for an early name change by submitting your dgti* supplementary identity card. To do so, please fill out the application for early name change below and send it to the relevant office (you can find more information below). If you have any questions about the procedure, please contact the LGBTQIA* contact point at: e.kilian@uni-bonn.de.

Early name and data change

If you have not yet officially changed your data, you can still apply for an early name change by submitting your dgti* supplementary identity card. To do so, please fill out the application for early name change below and send it to the relevant office. If, for example, you do not have a German identity card, residence permit or temporary suspension of deportation/residence permit, please contact the contact point or responsible persons at dgti* Supplementary Identity Card (ea@dgti.org) directly. Further information

About the dgti* supplementary ID card

The dgti supplementary ID card is a standardised ID document that records all self-selected personal data (first name, pronouns and gender) and displays a current passport photo. It is recognised and accepted by all interior ministries, the police, many authorities, banks, universities, insurance companies and other institutions. Where this is not yet the case, a QR code on the ID card provides further assistance.

The German Society for Trans* and Inter* Gender Identity (dgti) is a self-help association that aims to promote the acceptance of trans*, inter*, non-binary and agender (TINA*) people within society at all levels. The supplementary ID card is intended to prevent discrimination against people who have not yet officially changed their name.

Information on changing your name via the registry office

Since the Self-Determination Act came into force in November 2024, it has become easier to change your name and civil status. If your application for a name change has already been approved by the registry office, you can apply for the change online via the Study Service. To do so, you will need to provide the  'Bescheinigung über die Namensführung' (Certificate of Name Change) and proof of your old data (identity card, birth certificate).

To change your name on your identity card, you must contact the registry office in your place of birth.

FAQ

The dgti supplementary identity card is a standardized identity document, which documents all self-selected personal data (first name, pronouns and gender marker) and shows a current passport photo. It is known and accepted by all interior ministries, the police, many government agencies, banks, universities, insurance companies and others. It thus represents a state-approved transitional solution that standardizes and facilitates a name change throughout Germany prior to an official name change and can be useful for people, who cannot or do not want to change their name officially yet.

Unfortunately, the change of the university ID is only possible after your name has been officially changed. You can then submit the request to change your Uni-ID to the HRZ.

If you do not want your Uni-ID to be visible in your e-mail address, you can set up a mail alias. This is possible via the email portal of the University of Bonn. You can find more information here. If you want to change the display name your mails are sent with, you can do so via your mail client even before your name and ID have been changed.

If several offices are responsible for your case, it is sufficient to send the application to any one of the of the responsible offices. You only need to submit the application once.

If your name change has already been carried out, your data must first still be updated on sciebo. To do so, log in to the MYSCIEBO page of the University of Bonn and renew your account. Through this process your personal data will be matched with the database of the HRZ and thereby updated.
