Report a digital barrier

The University of Bonn aims to make its website accessible to everyone. Unfortunately, however, there are still restrictions caused by digital barriers in everyday university life. These are mostly only recognized by those who are affected by them. If you encounter any barriers on one of our pages, please let us know by using the form below.

If the form is not accessible for you, please send us an e-mail to barriere-melden@uni-bonn.de.

If you wish to receive a reply to your request, you will need to provide an e-mail address.
Please fill out this field using the example format provided in the placeholder.
The phone number will be handled in accordance with GDPR.

Here you will find information on data protection.

On the feedback mechanism

The feedback mechanism is part of the ‘Quick Wins für digitale Barrierefreiheit’ project of the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Unit and the Digital Science Centers (DiCe) of the University of Bonn.

The Equal Opportunity and Diversity Unit will receive your report. A ticket will be created, the reported barriers will be documented and your request will be forwarded to the department that is responsible for solving the problem. You will receive feedback as soon as possible, but within four weeks at the latest.

Setting up a feedback mechanism also helps us to monitor digital barriers that still exist at the University of Bonn in order to take measures to improve digital accessibility in the medium and long term. Not all barriers can be removed immediately, but they all will be recorded in order to identify future measures.

Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to all websites of the University of Bonn as well as its subpages of the central website (Plone) under www.uni-bonn.de.

As a public body within the meaning of Directive (EU) 2016/2102, the University of Bonn strives to make its websites accessible in accordance with the provisions of the Disability Equality Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (BGG NRW) and the Barrier-Free Information Technology Ordinance of North Rhine-Westphalia (BITV NRW) implementing Directive (EU) 2016/2102 of the European Parliament and of the Council.

Status of compatibility with the requirements

The accessibility requirements result from § 2, § 3 (1) to (3) and § 4 of the BITV NRW, which were issued on the basis of § 10e of the BGG NRW.

The verification of compliance with the requirements is based on a self-assessment of the websites on www.uni-bonn.de carried out as an ongoing process in the period since April 17, 2025 using the automated testing software Siteimprove. The Siteimprove software was used to check a sample (12,500 pages) of the University of Bonn's website of more than 500,000 pages. The barriers found in this way can be transferred to the entire website with a very high degree of probability. Barriers that have not yet been listed can be reported via the feedback mechanism and supplemented accordingly.

These websites are partially compliant with EU Directive 2016/2102. The content listed below is not accessible for the following reasons:

  • Images and alternative texts
    • In some cases, alternative texts for images, graphics and controls are missing.
    • Images and graphics sometimes contain an alternative text that does not match what is depicted on them. This is because a placeholder alt text is stored in the content management system, some of which has not been deleted or changed.
    • Graphics and images contain some text information.
    • On some pages, multiple links have the same alt text.
    • In some elements, the row height is fixed and/or below the minimum value.
    • In some cases, alternative texts are missing on buttons.
  • Colors and contrasts
    • Some of the color combinations of headings, images, and backgrounds do not meet the minimum accessibility requirements.
  • Structure and font size
    • The hierarchy of headings is sometimes not adhered to.
    • Controls are sometimes not large enough or are not positioned with an adequate distance to other controls.
  • Links
    • Some links lead to the same page in the same context.
    • Links are sometimes not clearly identifiable.
    • In some cases, identical links are used.
  • Audiovisual media
    • Some transcripts for audio content are partially missing.
  • Interactive elements
    • In some cases, interactive elements do not correspond with the minimum size or the minimum distance.
    • Texts may be truncated when it is resized.

Removing existing barriers

The University of Bonn has an extensive and decentralized web presence which over 1,000 editors work on through 19 Plone portals with a total of over 500,000 pages. Due to the disproportionate burden caused by the scope of the website, errors cannot be avoided and the website is not designed to be completely accessible. Editors are continuously sensitized about the topic through training and checklists in order to make Plone applications accessible as far as possible.

Some barriers are based on the content management system (Plone 6). This is a technically highly complex application. The removal of non-editorial technical barriers entails a higher time and personnel expenditure and will be rolled out successively.

Enforcement proceedings

If you have not received a satisfactory response to accessibility messages or inquiries within six weeks, you may contact the Ombudsman's Office for Accessible Information Technology. It is assigned to the Commissioner for the Interests of People with Disabilities in accordance with § 11 of the BGG NRW. If you would like an ombudsman procedure, you can fill out a corresponding form and send it to the Ombudsman's Office by e-mail. Further information on how to file a procedure can be found on the website of the Ombudsman's Office (German version only).
